Founded in 1401 by a Papal Bull of Pope Benedict XIII, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is one of the oldest healthcare institutions in Europe. As an institution, it has deep-rooted ties with the city of Barcelona and the whole of Catalonia. For five centuries, it was the only hospital of this size in the whole country, as well as being the headquarters of its Medical Faculty.
The Hospital’s age, however, has in no way been at the detriment of its pioneering nature in a range of initiatives. Specifically, in terms of postgraduate training in medical specialties, jointly with the Hospital General de Asturias and the Clínica de la Concepción, it founded the Hospital Bureau, which introduced the residency system, the first class of which graduated in 1966.
Later, when the medical resident intern programme was implemented by a single national session, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau joined the programme from the first graduating class in 1978, with 26 specialist resident interns. Since then, more specialties have gradually been incorporated to reach the 39 that the Hospital current has officially accredited, with programmes for different Bachelor Degrees and three Multi-Professional Teaching Units.
