Thoracic Surgery
Thymic tumors are rare, and the most common type is thymoma, which grows slowly but is malignant in nature. Their prognosis depends on the degree of invasion and the possibility of complete resection. The scarcity of cases means that clinical experience is limited and scattered, and the available literature is mainly based on retrospective series and single-center data, making it difficult to compare results due to a lack of unified classifications.
At the national level, the Thoracic Surgery Service and the Neuromuscular Pathology Unit, led by Dr. Isabel Illa, have been a reference in the treatment of these tumors and the associated paraneoplastic syndromes, creating the country’s first multidisciplinary thymic tumor committee. As a result of this experience, the Update Course on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Thymic Tumors has been organized, with its 4th edition taking place on October 16 and 17, aimed at all professionals involved in their multidisciplinary care.

Un equip multidisciplinari de l’Hospital de Sant Pau ha estat pioner a Catalunya aplicant amb èxit una innovadora tècnica endoscòpica per tractar l’acalàsia en nens, una malaltia minoritària que impedeix la relaxació normal del múscul inferior de l’esòfag i dificulta el pas dels aliments fins a l’estómac. Amb aquesta tècnica la intervenció dura al voltant d’una hora, de manera que el pacient pot prendre líquids al cap de 12 hores i sòlids en pocs dies.
El Dr. Carlos Guarner, cap clínic de la Unitat d’Endoscòpia del Servei de Patologia Digestiva, ha liderat l’equip multidisciplinari que ha dut a terme aquesta intervenció, on també hi han participat cirurgians pediàtrics del Servei de Pediatria.
