Rare and highly complex diseases require highly specialised and coordinated care. The Rare Diseases Programme at Hospital de Sant Pau promotes a multidisciplinary approach, with teams of professionals from different specialities that work with excellence and commitment to provide the highest quality care.

Our work has been recognised through various accreditations that identify us as a reference centre at regional, national, and international level, within the XUEC, CSUR, and ERN networks.

A XUEC (Xarxa d’Unitats d’Expertesa Clínica - Network of clinical expertise units) is a network of healthcare centres in Catalonia that work together to provide specialised care to patients with rare diseases of the same type or scope. Its goal is to ensure high-quality, coordinated care for all affected individuals across Catalonia.

A UEC (Unitat d’Expertesa Clínica - Clinical Expertise Unit) is a specific healthcare unit that belongs to the XUEC network and leads the care for a specific group of rare diseases.

At Hospital de Sant Pau, we are a Clinical Expertise Unit in 8 XUECs belonging to the Servei Català de Salut (Catalan Health Service), out of the 10 that operate in Catalonia.

The CSUR (Centres, Services and Reference Units from Spanish Health Service) are highly specialised healthcare units that treat rare diseases and manage highly complex procedures. These units offer specialised, safe, and high-quality care to patients across Spain.

To be recognised as a CSUR, centres must demonstrate solid expertise, achieve good clinical outcomes, and have multidisciplinary teams that can guarantee comprehensive and coordinated care.

At Hospital de Sant Pau, we hold 12 CSUR accreditations, endorsing us as a reference centre by the Ministry of Health of the Spanish Government.

The ERN (European Reference Networks) are networks of healthcare centres and experts from different European countries working together to improve diagnosis, treatment and research in rare diseases and complex clinical conditions requiring highly specialised care.

These networks are made up of multidisciplinary teams that share information and discuss clinical cases to facilitate diagnosis and provide the best possible treatment for each patient. This improves coordination between countries and fosters innovative solutions in healthcare at European level.

At Hospital de Sant Pau, we are a reference centre in a total of 6 ERN recognised by the European Commission.
