Dr. Josep Munuera
PhD. Josep Munuera is a specialist in X-Ray diagnosis, a radiologist since 2005 and doctor cum laude in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, since 2016. Senior radiologist (MD, PhD) specialized in cerebrovascular diseases, MRI and artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
He developed his activity as a neuro-radiologist (EDiNR) at Hospital Vall d'Hebron and Hospital Sant Pau, between 2005 and 2012. Later, he assumed the position of responsible for the area of MRI of the Institute of Diagnostic imaging in the Hospital Germans Tries i Pujol, until year 2016, when he joined as general clinical director of the Institute of Diagnostic imaging. In 2017 he began a new stage as head of service responsible for the area of quality and innovation-research at the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu.
He is the scientific chief of the Spanish Radiology Society (SERAM) and vice president of the Catalan Radiology Society (Radiologists of Catalonia), and has been a consultant to the European Agency of Drugs.
In the field of research and innovation, he leads national and European projects in the field of neuroscience and digital technologies applied to health. Currently he also serves as a neuroradiologist at the National Center of Cardiovascular Diseases (CNIC), and has a lead role in the “Advanced Imaging, AI and Guided Imaging Therapy” group at the Institut de Recerca Sant Pau, Barcelona. He is a published author of 97 peer-reviewed articles and 12 book chapters, and has supervised several PhD candidates in radiology and biomedical engineering. He also serves as a principal investigator of multiple national and European projects (ISCIII, EIT Health, Horizon Europe) focusing on neurovascular diseases, artificial intelligence (AI), cardiovascular diseases, and 3D imaging and modeling. He also is the inventor of a patented AI algorithm.
His specific areas of interest are cerebrovascular pathology and magnetic resonance imaging, as well as medical imaging innovation, especially in the field of Artificial and 3D Intelligence, which includes both clinical implantation, project development, and research in new medical imaging technologies, such as training.
At the teaching level, he is the co-director of the Expert3D Postgraduate accredited by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and participates as a professor at the School of Medicine of the UB and various masters (Neuromarketing and Digital Health). He also holds the roll as a Professor at the Politechnical University of Catalonia (UPC) at the School of Telecommunications Engineering.
