Functional Unit

Sarcomas

We are a reference unit dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with malignant mesenchymal bone and soft tissue tumours (sarcomas). We have a specialised multidisciplinary team with expertise across multiple surgical, oncological and diagnostic disciplines.

We have more than 40 years of experience in the management of sarcomas and a strong commitment to every patient. Teamwork, coordination between specialties and good communication enable us to provide rigorous and close care, with continuous support for every patient throughout the entire process.

Què és un sarcoma?

What is a sarcoma?

A sarcoma is a very rare type of cancer that originates in the body's supporting or connective tissues, which are the tissues that connect, support and provide cohesion to the body.

There are more than 150 varieties of sarcoma, each with different biological characteristics and behaviours. They are classified into two main groups:

  • Bone sarcomas, which originate in bone.
  • Soft tissue sarcomas, which originate in soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, the lining of joints, fat, blood vessels or nerves.

Unlike other more common tumours, sarcomas can develop anywhere in the body and affect people of any age. Their treatment varies according to the type and subtype of sarcoma, the part of the body where it is located, and the person's general health and age, among other factors.

The rarity and complexity of these tumours mean that they are considered rare diseases and that their diagnosis and treatment require specific expertise and specialisation.

We have a highly specialised multidisciplinary team that works in a coordinated manner to provide a personalised, safe approach based on the latest scientific evidence.

As a reference unit, we assess each case individually to define the best diagnostic and therapeutic strategy, supporting every patient and their families throughout the entire process.

  3. Facilitate agile and appropriate referrals. Promote clear and efficient referral pathways and second medical opinion processes for the assessment of sarcoma cases.
  4. Work in a coordinated way across specialties. Coordination between professionals and the work of the case management nurse facilitate continuous person-centred care, with communication and support for every patient and their families throughout the entire process.
  5. Promote research and innovation in sarcomas. Develop and participate in research projects and clinical trials aimed at improving oncological and functional outcomes and the quality of life of affected people.
  6. Collaborate with other reference centres. We work with other national and international units to address complex diagnoses and treatments and to participate in joint scientific projects.
